King’s Heath in Birmingham might not be that well known to anyone outside of the second city, but it has produced an astonishing number of people to whom art and sport have been fortunate to have graced the suburb, to have been influenced by the leafy green former village and the possibility of being part of a new breed of hero for the post-war generation.
Part of that incredible rebellious, heroic stance comes from Toyah Willcox, the chameleon look ever changing, a woman to whom no was just a two letter word that deserved a choice set of words in return, and who was perhaps the most wonderful sense of anarchy that anyone could ever hope to find in a period that produced the most exuberant of punk, this was the crowned Queen for Birmingham’s youth.
Following on from the Cherry Red boxset release from 2025 of Chameleon: The Very Best Of Toyah, the brand have really gone to town and brought to the public’s attention a set of CDs in Revelations detailing a huge swathe of tracks that were lost, unreleased, hidden away, and now lovingly restored to their rightful place in the Toyah pantheon of music.

A very special “tour date”… I had a great day in London last Friday with my amazing friend of almost 30 years, Su. I caught a very early flight from Glasgow Airport to Luton, got the Dart link, then the train and tube to Angel in Islington and was at Su’s front door by 10.30am, ready for a busy day. We had a great catch up – Su makes a lovely cup of tea – then headed to the The C.A.A. (Club for Acts and Actors), which is a wonderful club which Su is the President of. We then met up with a couple of Su’s friends, Paul and Iain, and headed to Browns in Covent Garden for a fantastic lunch. After that myself and Su took a trip to Soho and spent some time in Coven and Old Compton’s Bar, before returning to Su’s house for a rest. Later I caught the tube and train to Stanstead Airport for a late flight back home to Glasgow. What a day… Amazing.

It’s that time of year again – September – when I start working on the fanzines for Christmas (well they are completed, printed and in the post early December, which is technically Christmas), and these mark 70 issues of the (A5) fanzine. These will focus on “Ultimate Changeling” and there’s also an A4 Special (#5) dedicated to Toyah’s 1980 studio album, The Blue Meaning. That issue is the third of an A4 trilogy of issues, with #3 The Changeling and #4 Anthem. The Holy Safari Trinity!

Toyah was back in Blackpool on Friday (4th September), accompanied by Robert and Laurence, for the big switch on of the illuminations for 2026. Toyah’s tableau “Wishing Star” was one of many spectacular displays being lit for the first time.

Star-packed weekend of music with the climax of a traditional Proms celebration
Lytham Hall is all set to host its biggest show weekend of the year, as Lytham Proms features stars including Toyah, Aled Jones, Chesney Hawkes and Dodgy. The event is on Saturday and Sunday, from 3pm to 7.30pm each day, featuring a packed programme of music and the traditional ‘Last Night of the Proms’ celebration on Sunday.

We – me and Sharon – had an absolutely amazing day out in Glasgow. After breakfast at The Crystal Palace we spent a few hours in the (wonderful) West End, visiting Byres Road, Ashton Lane, Glasgow University, the Memorial Chapel, the Uni Cloisters, Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum… and then caught the subway back into the City Centre for a veggie lunch at McDonalds.
Later we saw Das Fluff (who have supported Toyah a couple of times on tour) at Ivory Blacks on Oswald Street and then did a mini pub crawl: The Sir John Moore, Solid Rock Café, Woody’s and finishing off a great day at Delmonicas.

Toyah Willcox heads star-studded Worcester University graduation
Stars will be graduating along with the students at the University of Worcestershire this September
Celebrated singer-songwriter Toyah Willcox, acclaimed author and journalist Helen Lewis, internationally renowned historian Professor Dame Linda Colley, and sports stars Dawn Scott and Lark Atkin-Davies are among those who will be honoured by the university at this year’s graduation ceremonies.
The five will receive Honorary Doctorates alongside hundreds of graduating students during ceremonies at Worcester Cathedral from September 8 to September 10.
Several distinguished individuals from business, education, the arts, charitable organisations and community leadership will also receive University Fellowships in recognition of their contributions to society and their support of the university and the wider region.

Toyah Willcox to receive University of Worcester doctorate
Singer-songwriter Toyah Willcox is amongst those who will receive honorary doctorates from the University of Worcester
She will be recognised alongside historian Professor Dame Linda Colley, journalist Helen Lewis and sports stars Dawn Scott and Lark Atkin-Davies during graduation ceremonies at Worcester Cathedral from September 8 to 10.
Professor David Green CBE DL, vice chancellor and chief executive of the University of Worcester, said: “Graduation is always one of the highlights of the university year as we celebrate the achievements of our students alongside individuals who have made exceptional contributions in their chosen fields.
